LGBT Unity is a membership organisation that supports LGBT asylum seekers and refugees who came to seek asylum in the UK. We provide emotional support, give advice, and provide a safe place where they can meet other people and integrate. We share our knowledge, and we signpost to places where they can get more support from other organisations.
LGBTU started in September 2014 to address a gap in support services for LGBT refugees and asylum seekers in Glasgow. We started as a self-organised peer group, with only donations from individual supporters.
We are member-led, and have gradually grown into a group of over 200 members, co-ordinated by a team of 5 volunteers. We registered as a charity in Scotland in 2022.
We receive referrals from the Home Office, Mears, NHS, Scottish Refugee Council and other LGBT community organisations from all over Scotland.
These images come from the many different events and activities that we are involved with on a regular basis.
We often take part in pride events, panel discussions and various arts and cultural events happening locally and nationwide.
Our regular meetings also include support groups, fundraising events, food banks, community outreach events, and the occasional party.
